hand cutting
Originally, all lettering was created by hand-cutting and we can still execute this type of lettering using traditional methods and tools at our Chapel Street premises by our own craftsmen.  In fact, we are one of only a limited number of monumental masons in the North-West who can achieve hand-cut lettering without engaging

However, nowadays most lettering is created using modern technology, which not only speeds up the process but it also minimizes costs for the client.

Once cut, whether by hand or by modern methods, and depending on the material, the lettering is generally then finished in either 23.5crt finest gold leaf; drilled and leaded; enamel painted or (occasionally) raised lead.

Lettering can be used to greatly enhance a memorial and its design.  Aesthetically, the use of one or more styles of lettering, in conjunction with italics, helps to create interesting differences in the text.  Please be advised that some styles of lettering are not appropriate for certain finishes and some finishes are not suitable for certain stones.  Please contact our office for expert advice.

We offer clients the choice of hand-cut letters or sandblasted letters and have carried out work involving Chinese, Jewish, Ukrainian and Polish lettering.
